The digital video syncstarter software is developed and employed by to provide frame accurate synced playback of multiple videos on multiple screens.
In the video art field there are many artworks requiring the real-time synced playback of audio/video: IvySync provides such functionality for Mpeg2 supported hardware decoders (full PAL/NTSC up to 16/9) , with fail-proof precision, continuing the Montevideo's historical activities in the field.
While being actively developed, releases are published as free and open source software (GNU GPL) available on the website sync.dyne.org
Since the early years of its development, this software was employed to exhibit video installations of Peter Bogers, Linda Wallace, Calin Dan, Erwin Olaf, Sami Kallinen, Lydia Schouten, Julika Rudelius and others.
Current research is achieving interactivity (sensor driven skip and resync across videos), support for more video channels in parallel, synchronisation of multiple high quality videos (HD).
As sync is currently achieved only on video outputs running on a single machine, the different approach of network-based sync also represents an important horizon of research.
IvySync has been created in 2005 in the Artlab of Montevideo / Time Based Arts as a research and development project. The software is written and mantained by Denis Roio with reviews and contributions by Wiel Seuskens, Robert De Geuss and Ramon Coelho.
The staff of the Netherlands Media Art Institute offers support, ad-hoc setup and shipping of video installations in pre-configured hardware/software solutions.
